Abstract

We have all heard that history repeats itself and that we should learn from past experiences. Now I truly understand and appreciate that concept, having lived through Hurricane Katrina and her aftermath. The entire experience has been a journey. In states accustomed to hurricanes, emergency preparation is a way of life. We know the drills. But in this disaster, there were many lessons learned and I feel obliged to share my story and the results of that fateful lesson. This article offers personal and professional actions that could be taken by anyone subject to a disaster, suggestions for WOC employers, and unique roles for WOC nurses that can benefit victims of any disaster.
